India is set to receive the next batch of cheetahs by December this year, with negotiations currently underway with Botswana, Kenya, and Namibia. This comes amid growing concerns over the high cheetah mortality rate in India. Of the 26 cubs born under the reintroduction project, only 16 have survived, putting the mortality rate at around 60% – significantly higher than the global average of 40%. The government is now pushing to bolster the population through fresh international transfers, even as experts call for a review of the project’s on-ground conditions and long-term sustainability.
