In an exclusive conversation at the India Today AI Summit, Professor Ajay Kumar Sood, the Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India, addressed concerns regarding AI-induced job losses. He stated, ‘Some jobs will go out of place, which is the lower end jobs like coding and so on, but a large number of jobs will be created,’ specifically highlighting the need for ‘human-in-the-loop’ auditing. Professor Sood detailed India’s strategic focus on ‘sovereign AI’ and the India AI Mission, which provides discounted compute resources and curated datasets to ensure inclusivity. He introduced the ‘techno-legal framework’ for AI safety, describing it as a ‘light-touch approach’ that embeds legal requirements directly into technology, similar to India’s Digital Public Infrastructure. Rejecting the notion that AI is a bubble, he emphasized its transformative impact on healthcare, agriculture, and education. He concluded that India’s strength lies in innovation and renewables, which will sustain the energy-intensive needs of future data centers while ensuring AI serves humanity rather than replacing it.
