A protest against pollution at Delhi’s India Gate led to the arrest of 23 people after demonstrators raised slogans supporting slain Naxal commander Madhvi Hidma and attacked police with pepper spray. The Delhi Police filed two FIRs in the incident, which occurred in a high-security, no-protest zone. According to a police official, ‘they not only use the force and violence against the police personnel, but also we also first time come across that they use chilly spray against the police personnel’. The BJP criticised the protestors, labelling them ‘urban Naxal Andolanjeevis’. The event took place as Delhi continues to face severe air quality, with the government issuing an advisory for private offices to operate with 50% staff.
