President Droupadi Murmu addressed a joint sitting of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha today. This will be her first address in Parliament after the NDA government won a historic third term. The Rajya Sabha will also hold its first session today. Earlier, BJP MP from Kota, Om Birla, was elected as the Lok Sabha Speaker for a second time, defeating Congress’s K Suresh via voice vote. After being elected, Birla recalled the Emergency imposed in 1975, which drew praise from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. On the other hand, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, who was appointed the Leader of Opposition, for the first time in 10 years, was felicitated by his party MPs and led Om Birla to the chair along with PM Modi. He also gave a short speech and congratulated Birla for being elected as the Speaker.
