Pope Francis Passes Away: Could An Indian Cardinal Become The Next Pope? | India Today

Pope Francis, or Jorge Mario Bergoglio, passed away this week at the age of 88. With his passing, the Church enters into a 9-day mourning period which will be followed by the secretive meeting of the College of Cardinals at the Sistine Chapel.
For a period that can go anywhere from a few hours to several years, the cardinals will be locked into the Chapel for repeated rounds of secret voting.
The voting process will only end once one candidate receives a majority of votes.
The College of Cardinals is comprised of 252 cardinals at the moment. Of these, only 135 are considered ‘electors’ as they are under the age of 80
Among this illustrious number are four cardinals from India who will not only help elect the new Pope, but could also be chosen as the new Supreme Pontiff.
