Karnataka Chief Minister Siddharamaiah has announced he will send a proposal to the central government to rename Bengaluru’s Namma Metro to ‘Basava Metro’, in honour of the 12th-century Lingayat icon Basavanna. The Chief Minister made the statement at a gathering of Lingayat seers in Bengaluru. He clarified that since the metro is a joint project between the state and central governments, he cannot give the final approval himself. The move has drawn political criticism over its timing, with an opponent questioning why the announcement was not made when the Congress party came to power in May 2023. The critic stated, “if you have so much love for Basavar ke bare mein ya Lingayat dharm ke bare mein aapko itna vishwas hai to jab congress party satta mein aaya tha 2023 mein May mein aaye jab aaye the tabhi aap ghoshna kar dena chahiye.”
