On National Space Day 2025, the Prime Minister announced major reforms and goals for India’s space sector. The highlight was the unveiling of the Bharatiya Antariksh Station (BASS), India’s first space station. The initial module, BAS-01, will weigh approximately 10 tons and orbit at an altitude of 450 kilometers. This station will serve as a hub for microgravity research, space science, and interplanetary exploration, and will act as a transit point for India’s mission to send an astronaut to the moon by 2040. In his address, the Prime Minister called for significant private sector involvement, setting ambitious targets. He stated, “I would like the private sector to come forward and in the next five years, we will be in a position where we can launch 50 rockets every year, one every week.” The government also aims to foster the growth of five space-sector unicorns within the next five years, linking space technology to governance and the ‘ease of living’ for citizens.
