Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a sharp attack on the Trinamool Congress (TMC) over its boycott of an event attended by President Draupadi Murmu in West Bengal’s Darjeeling district. The controversy erupted at the 9th International Santali Conclave, where a last-minute venue change led to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee criticising the President’s attendance. PM Modi stated that the TMC ‘insulted the President as well as the constitution of the country’ and ‘insulted the President from the tribal community’. In response, TMC representative Ritu Dutta accused the BJP of using the President’s chair to peddle political narratives, questioning why President Murmu was not invited to the Ram Mandir or new Parliament building inaugurations. Dutta defended the Chief Minister’s absence, stating she was engaged in a dharna fighting for the rights of Bengal’s people. The Chief Minister claimed the President was ‘tapped by the BJP’ and criticised the frequent visits by central leaders to the election-bound state.
