PM Modi’s Sri Lanka Visit LIVE: PM Modi Receives Highest Civilian Honour And A Grand Welcome
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Sri Lanka has created a wave across the island nation, with local newspapers and media outlets celebrating the historic occasion. From grand ceremonial welcomes to impactful bilateral discussions, PM Modi’s presence has been hailed as a testament to the deepening ties between the two neighbors. PM Modi received a warm ceremonial welcome at Colombo’s Independence Square, a first for any visiting foreign leader. The event, attended by Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and other dignitaries, highlighted the significance of this visit in strengthening India-Sri Lanka relations. Despite rainy weather, six senior Sri Lankan ministers personally welcomed PM Modi at the airport, showcasing the warmth and respect extended to him.
In a strong affirmation of bilateral ties, Sri Lankan President Ranil Dissanayake has assured Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Sri Lanka will not allow its land or surrounding waters to be used in any manner that could threaten India’s security interests. The statement was made during high-level discussions in Colombo, where the two nations also signed a landmark Defence Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the first time.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, briefing the media on the outcome of the talks, said, "The President of Sri Lanka stated very clearly that Sri Lankan territory will not be used or be allowed to be used in any manner that is inimical or detrimental to India’s interests." He further added, "During discussions today, he said that neither Sri Lanka’s land nor the oceans around it will be allowed to be used in any manner inimical to India’s security."
