Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in an Independence Day speech, announced a ‘Diwali bonanza’ for the middle class, which will be delivered through ‘next generation GST reforms’. The stated aim of these reforms is to ease the lives of people by making goods cheaper. A high-power committee has been reviewing the GST system, which has been in place for eight years, in consultation with states. The Prime Minister stated, "my dear compatriots, we are bringing the next generation GST reforms. They will become a gift for you during Diwali. The taxes for the needs of the common man will be reduced to a great extent." Potential changes could see GST reductions on items like pulses, rice, kitchen utensils, footwear, and even air conditioners, which may move from a 28% tax bracket to a lower one.
