In a special Lok Sabha debate marking the 150th anniversary of ‘Vande Mataram’, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a scathing attack on the Congress party’s historical handling of the national song. Modi cited a 1937 letter from Jawaharlal Nehru to Subhash Chandra Bose, arguing that the Congress ‘kneeled down’ to the Muslim League by truncating the song. He stated, ‘Why was there so much betrayal with Vande Mataram?’, linking the decision to the eventual partition of India. The Prime Minister emphasized that Mahatma Gandhi had once called the song a ‘passionate prayer to India’ in 1905. He accused the Congress of ‘appeasement politics’ that began with the song’s partition and led to the country’s division.
