During an election rally in Cooch Behar, West Bengal, Prime Minister Narendra Modi targeted the Trinamool Congress (TMC) for using the term ‘Ishtihar’ for its election manifesto instead of a Bengali word. The Prime Minister linked the term to the ‘Lal Ishtihar’ of 1905, which he associated with a historical massacre of Hindus and religious forces. In a swift retaliation, the TMC pointed out that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) itself used the term ‘Ishtihar’ for its Bengali manifestos in the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
