In an exclusive interview with India Today, Manickam Tagore, member of Parliament Lok Sabha and whip of the Congress Party, defended the opposition’s demand for a discussion on the West Asia war before debating the no-confidence motion against the Speaker. Tagore said, ‘The Leader of Opposition is not allowed to speak in the Parliament,’ citing this as a key reason for the no-confidence notice submitted by 118 MPs against Speaker Om Birla. He accused the government of tactical manoeuvring by inserting the West Asia statement into the day’s agenda without prior consultation. Tagore stated, ‘The Prime Minister is keeping silence and is busy with Bengal elections,’ while Indians remain stranded in the Gulf amid an energy crisis. He criticised Trade Minister Piyush Goyal, saying he ‘has completely sold off India’s interest,’ and alleged that India now needs US permission to buy oil from Russia. Tagore confirmed that Congress speakers including Gaurav Gogoi, Manish Tiwari, Dipendra Udda and Jyothi Mani are ready to debate the no-confidence motion.
