Congress President Ramesh Chaturvedi outlines a new vision for India’s maritime sector, highlighting that the country pays approximately 75 billion dollars, or six lakh crore rupees, to foreign shipping companies annually. To achieve the goal of a developed India by 2047, the focus is on self-reliance through next-generation reforms. These include new maritime laws, a ‘One Nation, One Port Process’, and granting infrastructure status to large shipbuilding companies to ease financing. Chaturvedi stated, “What I want to say is that if the previous governments had invested in the shipping industry, the world would have been using our ships today.” The government is also working on three major schemes, with an investment of over seventy thousand crore rupees, to modernize shipyards and improve design capabilities, positioning shipbuilding as the ‘mother of all industries’ to support various sectors and MSMEs.
