In a statement to Parliament on Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed India’s energy security amid the West Asia crisis, asserting that the country’s energy supplies remain secure despite disruptions at the Strait of Hormuz, a route that carries nearly 50 per cent of India’s oil imports. The Prime Minister assured that LPG supply remains a priority and farmers will receive adequate fertilisers ahead of the Kharif season. He said, ‘The Indian government is constantly monitoring the shipping routes of the Gulf and its surroundings. We are trying to ensure that oil, gas, fertilisers, and other essential goods reach India safely.’ Modi stressed that disruptions to key routes like Hormuz are unacceptable and urged dialogue and diplomacy. The Congress demanded a full discussion on the West Asia crisis, while the Aam Aadmi Party’s Sanjay Singh urged the government to heed opposition advice. The impact of the West Asia war is already visible, with LPG prices hiked, airfares up, shortage of cooking gas reported across India, edible oil prices climbing, and premium petrol prices increased.
