Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth dismissed questions about the time frame of the widening conflict in Iran, saying: “President Trump has all the latitude in the world to talk about how long it may or may not take. Four weeks, two weeks, six weeks. It could move up. It could move back.”
The Republican president said the U.S. and Israel had struck hundreds of targets already. That included Israel and the U.S. bombing Iranian missile sites and targeted its navy, claiming to have destroyed its headquarters and multiple warships.
Hegseth and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Air Force Gen. Dan Caine on Monday held the Trump administration’s first news briefing since Saturday’s strikes.
Caine refused to give details of US troop numbers or movements: "I don’t want to talk specifics, because that would tip the enemy off.
The briefing comes as the conflict has intensified into a wider war in the region. Iran and its allied armed groups have launched missiles at Israel, Arab states and U.S. military targets in the Middle East.
For just under an hour, the Pentagon leaders gave some information about the U.S.-Israeli operation and fielded questions from reporters.
But neither Hegseth or Caine detailed the deaths of the four U.S. service members killed so far.
They also didn’t give specifics when asked by reporters about ultimate goals of the operation, how long it might last or what success would look like, with Hegseth saying doing so would disadvantage U.S. forces.
