Delhi is grappling with severe flooding after the Yamuna river crossed the danger mark, inundating several low-lying areas. The situation, reminiscent of the 2023 floods, was triggered by water released from the Hathnikund Dam. Areas like the Monastery Market, Yamuna Bazaar, and Majnu ka Tila are severely affected, with businesses shut and residents evacuated. The Wazirabad cremation ground has also been submerged. Amidst the crisis, Delhi’s Minister for Irrigation and Flooding stated that people have built their homes within the river’s floodplains. He said, "unhone apna ghar poora yamuna ke andar Mein bana rakhe toh yamuna nahi bhar rahiye unhone apne gharon ko andar bana liya" (They have built their homes inside the Yamuna, so the Yamuna isn’t flooding, they have built their homes inside it), placing the blame on encroachment and raising questions of long-term accountability.
