A special session of Parliament is scheduled for April 16 to 18 to discuss the implementation of the Women’s Reservation Bill, officially known as the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam. The legislation aims to reserve 33 percent of seats for women in legislatures, with the goal of making it a reality by the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. Despite being the world’s largest democracy, India currently ranks 149th globally in women’s parliamentary representation, with women making up only 13.6 percent of the Lok Sabha in 2024. This starkly contrasts with the grassroots level, where women constitute nearly 46 percent of elected representatives in Panchayati Raj institutions. The upcoming debate highlights the long political journey of the bill, which faced decades of delays over demands for sub-quotas. Summarising the core demand for the bill, proponents in Parliament have emphasised that women must be respected as equals rather than just receiving ceremonial salutes. The session will determine if India can align its national legislative representation with global standards and its own local governance successes.
