Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has formed a three-member panel to probe Justice Yashwant Varma after piles of burnt cash were found at his Delhi residence in March 2025. The panel — including Justice Aravind Kumar, Justice MM Shrivastava, and senior advocate BV Acharya — will investigate under Articles 124, 217, and 218 of the Constitution.
An impeachment motion signed by 146 MPs has been accepted, marking a possible first in independent India’s history. If found guilty, Justice Varma will face votes in both Houses before the motion is sent to the President.
The scandal broke after firefighters discovered burnt bundles of money in Varma’s home. While he denies the charges, the Supreme Court has already dismissed his challenge to an in-house inquiry, citing “not confidence-inspiring conduct.”
