A 47-year-old Pakistani man, Asif Merchant, has been charged with plotting to assassinate US politicians after Iranian spies allegedly recruited him to target President Donald Trump and former President Joe Biden. The FBI presented Merchant in Brooklyn Federal Court, revealing he was offered $5,000 by Iranians to carry out the assassination plot. Merchant, arrested in 2024, claimed he was forced into the plot to save his family. The accused also allegedly targeted former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley. According to the FBI testimony, Merchant pleaded guilty and stated he was compromised by Iranian intelligence. The revelation comes amid heightened tensions in West Asia, with the US conducting Operation Epic Fury against the Iranian regime. President Trump previously claimed in 2025 that he had written to Iran about awareness of assassination plots against him. The extent of Iranian involvement and potential connections to other parties remain under investigation.
