A new study analyzing Pacific Ocean sediments reveals Earth’s temperature could rise by 7 to 14°C—far beyond the 2.3 to 4.5°C range projected by the IPCC. Using the TEX86 method, researchers from NIOZ and the Universities of Utrecht and Bristol examined a 45-year-old drill core and found that doubling atmospheric CO2 could trigger extreme warming. Historical data from 15 million years ago shows Earth’s average temperature was 18°C, offering a stark warning of what may lie ahead if CO2 emissions aren’t drastically curbed.
