Over 1,000 Dead In Syria As Assad’s Loyalists Clash With New Syrian Government
More than 1,000 people have been killed in the two days of violent clashes in Syria between government supporters and people thought to be loyal to the ousted President Bashar al Assad.
The death toll, reported by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, makes the two days of violence some of the deadliest since Syria’s conflict began 14 years ago.
The Syrian government said it is responding to attacks from remnants of Assad’s forces and blamed "individual actions" for the violence. The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that seven hundred and forty-five civilians were killed, mostly in massacres, as well as 148 pro-Assad fighters and 125 people from security forces.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the violence erupted on the afternoon of March 6 when pro-Assad militants ambushed Syrian security forces in the Latakia region, a former stronghold of the deposed leader and home to the minority Alawites, who made up his support base.
On March 7, Sunni Muslim gunmen loyal to the government began revenge killings against members of Assad’s minority Alawite sect, according to people in the region.
