A united opposition, including Rahul Gandhi and other INDIA bloc leaders, protested in Parliament against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar. With placards stating, "SIR is a death of democracy," the opposition is demanding the Prime Minister’s presence in the house for a discussion on the matter which they allege is being done at the behest of the BJP to disenfranchise minorities and Dalits ahead of state elections. The government maintains that the revision is a standard procedure conducted by the autonomous Election Commission of India to cleanse the electoral system of illegal voters. The opposition has also approached the Supreme Court regarding the issue, which has become a significant point of contention between the treasury and opposition benches.
