Opposition Set To Bring No Confidence Motion Against Om Birla | LoP | Debate On March 9 | Sansad

In a significant escalation in Parliament, opposition parties have submitted a notice for a no-confidence motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla under Article 94(C). Senior Congress leader and MP Manickam Tagore, speaking to India Today, described the move as an ‘extraordinary step for the opposition, out of an extraordinary circumstance.’ He alleged that the Leader of Opposition, Rahul Gandhi, has been repeatedly denied the opportunity to speak, violating long-standing parliamentary conventions. Tagore stated, ‘Rahul Gandhi ji has that requisite number also. But he’s been treated badly by the government, that usually whenever Leader of Opposition wants to speak also, he’s not allowed.’ The motion, backed by 118 MPs, cites grievances including the suspension of members and alleged selective action by the chair. In response, Speaker Om Birla has reportedly decided to recuse himself from presiding over the House until the motion is decided. The discussion on the motion is likely to be taken up on 9 March, at the start of the second part of the budget session.
