The opposition is reportedly considering moving an impeachment motion against the Chief Election Commissioner. This development follows a recent press conference by the Election Commission, where the Chief Election Commissioner issued a 7-day ultimatum to the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha over claims of vote manipulation. The opposition has previously accused the Chief Election Commissioner of acting as a spokesperson for a political party. Leaders of the India bloc parties met and are seriously discussing this idea. The confrontation between the Election Commission and the opposition is expected to escalate. The process to impeach the Chief Election Commissioner is similar to that of a judge. As per a constitutional expert, "CEC can be engaged just like a judge. The same procedure is followed. The procedure which is followed in the case of a judge, you know is followed in the case of CEC also the same procedure and it is the same manner." The grounds for impeachment are typically corruption and incapacity. There is no known precedence for such a motion against a Chief Election Commissioner.
