Samajwadi Party Chief Akhilesh Yadav has sparked a political firestorm in Uttar Pradesh, accusing the Election Commission and the BJP of orchestrating the mass deletion of opposition supporters from the voter rolls. During the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise, approximately 2.89 crore names were reportedly removed from the draft voter list. Yadav alleged that authorities are misusing Form 7 to disenfranchise eligible voters, stating, ‘What is the need of Form 7, when you have done such a big exercise?’ He further claimed that signatures are being forged or taken from illiterate individuals to facilitate these removals. While officials maintain that the deletions primarily involve deceased, duplicate, or migrant voters, the Samajwadi Party chief contends the process targets the ‘PDA’ (Pichda, Dalit, Alpasankhyak) vote bank to influence the 2027 Assembly elections. The BJP has dismissed these allegations as politically motivated attempts to shield illegal voters. This controversy joins a growing chorus of opposition leaders questioning the transparency of the Election Commission’s revision processes across India.
