Speaking with Gaurav Sawant, Colonel John Spencer, Chair of Urban Warfare Studies at the Modern War Institute at West Point, analysed the ongoing military operations against Iran. Spencer expressed his personal view that the current operation ‘will create a greater peace’ by addressing regional instability. He highlighted that the United States and Israel have set limited objectives, explicitly stating that ‘regime change is not one of those’ goals. Instead, the focus remains on neutralizing Iran’s missile and nuclear programmes and ensuring the security of the Strait of Hormuz. Spencer pointed to the internal fragility of the Iranian regime, noting its inability to provide essential services like water to Tehran as a significant factor. He dismissed the likelihood of a wider Shia-Sunni religious war, arguing that the regime’s actions are unpopular even within Iran. Spencer concluded that the operation aims for a secure economic global connectivity rather than an unlimited ‘forever war’.
