The Rajya Sabha has passed the Online Gaming Regulation Bill 2025, which bans online gaming apps involving real money. The bill was cleared on the last day of the parliamentary session amid protests from the opposition, a day after its passage in the Lok Sabha. Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated the law was needed to counter money laundering, terror funding, and a rise in suicides, citing 32 deaths in 31 months linked to online betting. The opposition criticized the manner of the bill’s passage. Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge said that "…not allowing them to speak was undemocratic." The government maintained its position, highlighting addiction and fraud as key reasons for the ban. The bill now awaits the President’s assent to become law.
