Online Gaming Ban Bill Passed In LS: Govt Cites 32 Deaths Linked To Online Gaming In 31 Months

A bill to ban online games involving money was passed in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday. IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnav stated the rationale is to curb misuse for alleged money laundering and terror financing. The minister also cited rising suicide rates, with 32 deaths linked to online gaming in 31 months. The government intends to promote e-sports and online social gaming. The bill is now set to be tabled in the Rajya Sabha. However, the All India Gaming Federation has urged regulation instead of a ban, warning the move could harm the industry. It fears a ban would drive players to illegal platforms and threaten jobs in a growing sector.
