Onam Explained: The Legend of King Mahabali's Annual Return To His People

India Today’s Akshita Nandagopal explains the significance of Onam, the 10-day harvest festival celebrated across Kerala. The celebration commemorates the annual return of the beloved Asura king, Mahabali, who was granted a wish by Lord Vishnu to visit his people once a year. The story involves Lord Vishnu appearing as the dwarf Brahmin, Vamana, and asking for three steps of land, a request which led to Mahabali offering his own head. Impressed by his devotion, Vishnu granted him his wish. As King Mahabali said, "I want to be able to visit my people." Onam is a cultural celebration for all faiths, marked by traditions like the Pookalam flower arrangements and the grand Sadhya feast, uniting Malayalees everywhere in a celebration of their heritage. #onam #kerala #kingmahabali #itwebvideos #harvestfestival #indiatoday #pookalam #onamsadhya #lordvishnu #vamana #indianculture #festivalofindia #keralatradition #happyonam #onamcelebration #malayalee
