Majoti, a young man from Morbi, India, initially traveled to Russia to pursue higher education. According to Ukrainian media and reports, he became entangled in legal issues related to drugs. To avoid facing a potential seven-year imprisonment, he was persuaded to enlist in the Russian military. Majoti was promised that he would serve for only a year and then be allowed to return home. He underwent approximately 16 days of basic military training in September, where he learned weapon handling, firing rifles, and grenade throwing.
He was then moved to a designated "green zone," where, a few days later, his unit launched an advance covering over three kilometers and began preparing for trench digging. During this operation, Majoti states that he was exhausted and told his commander he wanted out, citing physical pain and fatigue. His commander responded by ordering others to take his radio and disperse his unit. After walking several kilometers, Majoti encountered a Ukrainian trench and claimed he had no intention to continue fighting. He had planned to escape and ultimately surrendered to Ukrainian forces during the initial assault, emphasizing that he never wanted to fight and had planned his escape from the start.
Majoti expressed a desire not to return to Russia, stating he found no truth or value there, and preferred to stay in Ukraine, even in prison if necessary. He also alleged that despite promises of financial compensation for his service, he never received any payments. Reports indicate that at least 12 Indians have lost their lives fighting for Russia against Ukraine, with 16 others still missing, according to Deutsche Welle. This situation has strained the otherwise warm relations between Moscow and New Delhi, with India maintaining a neutral stance in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, and refusing to join international sanctions against Moscow.
