Om Birla Refuses Discussion On General MM Naravane’s Memoir 'Four Stars Of Destiny' In Lok Sabha

In this session of the Lok Sabha, Speaker Om Birla intervened during a heated debate involving General MM Naravane’s memoir, ‘Four Stars of Destiny’. The Speaker firmly stated, ‘There is no tradition of discussion on newspaper cuttings, books, or any other subject that is not authentic.’ The confrontation arose when a Member of Parliament attempted to quote from the memoir, which treasury benches claimed was not yet published. Om Birla cited Rule 349 and Rule 353 of the parliamentary procedure to maintain order, emphasizing that members should not read from materials unrelated to the immediate business of the House unless they are authenticated. He urged the Leader of the Opposition to uphold the dignity of the House and follow established traditions. The Speaker clarified that his ruling was based on long-standing parliamentary precedents rather than new regulations, effectively blocking the use of the controversial book as a reference during the proceedings.
