Paris Olympics are less than 2 weeks away, and an uneasy question hangs over the Games. The big worry: Will the Seine River be clean enough for athletes to swim in? Triathlon & marathon swimming are scheduled to take place in Paris’ historic waterway. Paris has undertaken massive efforts to clean up the long-polluted Seine river. However, the water has tested unsafe for humans in recent days, and cleaner on others.
Paris invested $1.5BN in building infrastructure to catch more stormwater when it rains. If rain affects Seine’s flow, the triathlon would no longer feature the swimming part. Marathon swimming would be then relocated to the Vaires-sur-Marne Nautical Stadium. Organisers optimistic that drier, sunnier weather will allow events to go as planned. Pertinent to note, the sun’s ultraviolet rays kill menacing bacteria like E. coli in water. The French Sports Minister recently took a plunge to show the famed river is clean.
