The decision was taken after an emergency meeting called by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last night, where he instructed ministries to ensure that the rise in international crude oil prices should not burden the common man in India. Officials from the Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Petroleum participated in the meeting, after which the Finance Ministry issued a notification announcing the excise duty slash. Ministers including Kiran Rijiju and JP Nadda have also welcomed the decision.
