A female undergraduate student at FM Autonomous College in Balasore, Odisha, attempted self-immolation outside the college premises. The student had accused the Head of Department, Sameer Sahu, of mental harassment and demanding sexual favours. After her complaints were allegedly ignored, she set herself ablaze, suffering over 90% burns. The victim is now in critical condition at AIIMS Bhubaneswar. Balasore SP Raj Prasad confirmed that HOD Sameer Sahu has been arrested, questioned, and produced before court. The police are investigating alleged financial coercion, the role of other faculty members, and a possible administrative cover-up.
