A devastating fire at the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, Odisha, early Monday morning resulted in the death of at least seven patients. The fire erupted around 3 am in the trauma care ICU located in the medicine department building on the first floor. Within minutes, thick smoke engulfed the ICU ward where 18 to 20 critical patients were undergoing treatment. The fire is suspected to have been caused by an electrical short circuit in the air conditioning system or medical equipment. Hospital staff and fire safety personnel acted quickly to evacuate patients, but the smoke and intensity proved fatal for many already in fragile condition. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi visited the hospital and announced compensation of 25 lakh rupees for the families of the deceased. Five to seven people were also injured. A high-level probe has been ordered to determine the exact cause and check for lapses in fire security protocols.
