A shocking incident has emerged from Odisha, where the state president of the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), Udit Pradhan, has been arrested. The Congress youth leader is accused of raping a 19-year-old student on March 18th, 2025. According to the complaint, the accused allegedly spiked the victim’s soft drink, and she was sexually assaulted while unconscious. The victim also stated she was threatened, which delayed the filing of the complaint. The arrest has put the Congress party on the back foot, as it has been actively protesting against the BJP-ruled state government over women’s safety. A key question raised is whether this incident exposes a culture of impunity, with one speaker noting, "It clearly shows that there is some amount of political backing, which gives them the sense that they can indulge in such, you know, crimes with so much impunity."
