In an exclusive interview with India Today, Erik Solheim, former Under Secretary General of the United Nations and President of the Europe Asia Center, discussed the economic repercussions of the West Asia war. He emphasised that the duration of the conflict is the most critical factor, stating, ‘If it lasts long, it may be a huge setback to the global economic growth.’ Solheim warned that prolonged conflict would result in significant inflationary pressures globally, affecting fuel, fertilizer, and agricultural prices. Poor African nations could face electricity shortages and severe poverty, while developed nations like India would experience increased costs across sectors. He noted that historically, wars are easy to start but difficult to end, citing the Iraq and Afghanistan wars as examples. Solheim expressed doubt about the possibility of US-led regime change in Iran, stating there is ‘no way the United States can make regime change happening in Iran.’ He called for rationality from both the United States and Iran to resolve the conflict swiftly.
