NISAR Launch LIVE: Isro’s Most Powerful Satellite To Be Injected In Sun’s Polar Orbit
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is set to launch the NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) satellite, a landmark Indo-US collaborative mission from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh, using the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV-F16). The 2,392 kg NISAR satellite, costing approximately $1.5 billion (₹12,500 crore), is the most expensive Earth observation satellite to date and will be placed in a 743 km Sun-synchronous orbit with a 98.4° inclination. Featuring a dual-frequency radar system—NASA’s L-band and ISRO’s S-band, integrated with a 12-meter unfurlable mesh reflector antenna—NISAR will utilize Sweep SAR technology to scan Earth’s land and ice surfaces every 12 days, providing high-resolution, all-weather, day-and-night data. The satellite will monitor environmental changes, including ice sheet dynamics, forest biomass, soil moisture, and crustal deformation due to earthquakes, landslides, and volcanic activity, aiding disaster management, agriculture, and climate monitoring. The mission, developed over a decade despite delays due to COVID-19 and antenna corrections, marks a significant milestone in India-US space cooperation, with all data to be publicly shared. Launch preparations began in April 2025, with the GSLV’s second stage flagged off from the ISRO Propulsion Complex in Mahendragiri.
