Following the launch of the GSLV Mark II with the NISAR satellite on July 30, a major collaboration between ISRO and NASA, NASA’s NISAR Project Scientist Paul Rosen detailed the mission’s capabilities. Rosen stated, ‘NISAR has the ability…to measure changes in the position of the Earth down to millimeters to centimeters scale.’ The satellite, a first-of-its-kind, carries two powerful radars, one built by ISRO and one by NASA, allowing it to see through clouds, day and night. It will cover all of Earth’s land and ice-covered surfaces every 12 days. The data will create ‘three-dimensional movies of the Earth’, enabling the study of ice sheets, forests, natural hazards like earthquakes and volcanoes, and the carbon cycle. The mission represents the first time two radars will be flown together in space for the mission’s life, operating simultaneously.
