On this Special Report, the focus is on the Union Budget proposals for the financial year 2026-27. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced a significant boost to public capital expenditure, stating, ‘In this coming year, That is, financial year 2026-27, I propose to increase it to 12.2 lakh crores to continue the momentum.’ The Minister outlined a comprehensive strategy to empower MSMEs through a ₹10,000 crore SME growth fund and the integration of TREADS with the Government e-Marketplace (GeM). Key infrastructure initiatives include the establishment of a new dedicated freight corridor from Dankuni to Surat and the operationalization of 20 new national waterways. The proposal also highlights the rejuvenation of 200 legacy industrial clusters and the creation of a ‘corporate mitra’ cadre to assist small businesses with compliance. Furthermore, the government aims to double the share of inland waterways and coastal shipping to 12% by 2047, supported by a new coastal cargo promotion scheme and incentives for indigenous sea plane manufacturing.
