Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the Union Budget for 2026-2027 in Parliament, marking the first budget prepared in Kartavya Bhavan. During her speech, she stated, ‘Our aim is to transform aspiration into achievement and potential into performance as we ensure that the dividends of growth reach every farmer, the scheduled caste, the scheduled tribes, the nomads, the youth, the poor and the women.’ Sitharaman highlighted India’s 7% growth rate and the government’s focus on fiscal prudence and structural reforms over the last 12 years. She tabled the 16th Finance Commission report for 2026-2031 and outlined a threefold ‘Kartavya’ approach to accelerate economic growth, fulfill people’s aspirations, and ensure inclusive access to resources. The Minister emphasized that the budget is driven by ‘Yuva Shakti’, inspired by ideas from the Vikasit Bharat Young Leaders Dialogue 2026, while navigating a challenging external environment of disrupted supply chains and transforming production systems through AI and new technologies.
