Nirmala Sitharaman Announces Major Customs Reforms To Boost Ease Of Doing Business

On this Special Report, the focus is on the significant customs and trade reforms announced by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. Presenting the budget, Sitharaman emphasized a shift toward trust-based systems, stating, ‘These reforms will move away from the current system of officer-dependent approvals and reduce transaction delays and compliance costs.’ Key proposals include extending the duty deferral period for Tier 2 and Tier 3 Authorized Economic Operators from 15 to 30 days and increasing the validity of advanced rulings from three to five years. The Minister also announced the removal of the ₹10 lakh value cap on e-commerce exports to support small businesses and startups. Furthermore, the government plans to implement a single interconnected digital window for cargo clearance by the end of the financial year and expand AI-powered non-intrusive scanning across all major ports. These measures aim to position India as a global trade powerhouse while simplifying processes for honest taxpayers and the fishing industry.
