In a strong reaction to the Delhi High Court’s decision to suspend the life sentence of expelled BJP leader Kuldeep Singh Sengar, Nirbhaya’s mother Asha Devi has expressed deep concern. Speaking on the development, she questioned the message being sent to society regarding women’s safety. Sengar, convicted in the 2017 Unnao rape case, was granted bail on December 23, 2025, pending his appeal. Asha Devi highlighted the immense struggles of the survivor, whose father was killed in custody and who survived a life-threatening accident. She termed the suspension of the sentence as ‘unfortunate’ and a ‘matter of great concern,’ fearing it would embolden other convicts to seek similar relief on medical grounds.
