Indian national Nikhil Gupta has pleaded guilty in a US federal court for his involvement in a foiled murder-for-hire plot targeting Khalistani separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun in New York. US prosecutors revealed that Gupta attempted to hire a hitman, who was actually an undercover federal agent, to carry out the assassination in Manhattan. Gupta, who was arrested in the Czech Republic in June 2023 and later extradited to the United States, allegedly acted under the direction of former Indian intelligence official Vikash Yadav. Court documents indicate that Gupta offered $100,000 to an individual he believed was a criminal associate to coordinate the killing. The sentencing for Gupta is scheduled for 29 May 2026. While the case has sparked significant diplomatic attention between Washington and New Delhi, the Indian government has dissociated itself from the alleged plot, maintaining that such actions are contrary to its official policy. The report highlights the ongoing legal proceedings in the Southern District of New York.
