An Indian national, Nikhil Gupta, has pleaded guilty in a US federal court to charges related to a foiled murder-for-hire plot targeting Khalistani separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun in New York. The US Department of Justice stated that Gupta pleaded guilty to three counts: murder-for-hire, conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire, and conspiracy to commit money laundering. These charges carry a maximum sentence of 40 years in prison, with sentencing scheduled for May 2026. Prosecutors allege Gupta acted under the direction of Vikash Yadav, a former Indian government employee linked to the Research and Analysis Wing. The indictment claims Gupta attempted to hire a hitman, who was actually an undercover DEA officer, and arranged a $15,000 advance payment. Gupta reportedly instructed the operative to avoid carrying out the hit during the Indian Prime Minister’s June 2023 US visit. While the US Attorney’s office emphasized a clear message to ‘nefarious foreign actors,’ the Indian government has maintained silence on the latest developments while previously dissociating itself from the alleged rogue operation.
