A newly discovered asteroid, named 2024 JN16, had a close brush with Earth, passing just 11,500 miles (18,500 km) from the planet’s surface—closer than many communication satellites. Measuring about the size of a car (around 15 feet wide), the asteroid was spotted only two days before its flyby by amateur astronomer Gennadiy Borisov at the MARGO Observatory in Crimea. Belonging to the Apollo group of asteroids, which have Earth-crossing orbits, 2024 JN16 briefly shone at magnitude 13 and was visible through telescopes. Its close approach happened on May 16 at 5:50 AM EDT, making it one of the more significant near-Earth asteroid events this year. Scientists note that these types of space rocks can be unpredictable and are monitored closely because of the potential risk they pose—like the Chelyabinsk meteor in 2013. As of now, the asteroid is moving away from Earth and can only be observed using long-exposure photography.
