Scientists at Imperial College London have uncovered how normal proteins transform into deadly prions — the culprits behind fatal brain diseases like CJD, Kuru, and mad cow disease. For the first time, they identified the intermediate step in the misfolding process and successfully blocked it using specially designed antibodies in lab tests. This breakthrough could lead to new treatments for currently incurable prion diseases. While still in early stages, the research marks a major step toward future drug development and brain disease prevention.
