This new layer, which pulls the lower jaw backward toward the ear, adds to our understanding of jaw stabilization. Detailed analysis of tissue from body donors revealed the muscle’s unique structure and function, challenging existing anatomical textbooks that only describe two layers. The study, published in Annals of Anatomy, marks a rare modern discovery in human anatomy and highlights the complexity still left to uncover in the human body.
