Iran’s election authority: Pezeshkian leading in initial presidential election results. Out of the initial 2,547,381 votes counted, Masoud Pezeshkian had won 1,263,874. Pezeshkian was leading by a small margin with hardliner Saeed Jalili trailing behind. Pezeshkian has said he wants better ties with the West & less enforcement of hijab law. The doctor aligned himself with other moderate & reformist figures during his campaign. His main advocate has been Iran’s former Foreign Minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif. Ex-FM Mohammad Javad Zarif reached Iran’s 2015 nuclear deal with world powers. The 2015 deal saw sanctions lifted in exchange for the atomic program being curtailed. Heart surgeon Pezeshkian was born in 1954 to an Azeri father and a Kurdish mother. He speaks Azeri and long has focused on the affairs of Iran’s minority ethnic groups. Like many, he served in the Iran-Iraq war, sending medical teams to the battlefront. Personal tragedy shaped his life after a 1994 car crash killed his wife and daughter. The doctor never remarried and raised his remaining two sons and a daughter alone.
